ARABIS BLEPHAROPHYLLA SPRING CHARM
A dwarf evergreen perennial which creeps along the ground creating a hugging mat of foliage. It will produce a mass of sweetly scented rosy pink flowers flowers from late spring into early summer. Classed typically as an alpine it is very popular for rock gardens and gravelled areas. It will trail beautifully over the sides of stone walls or containers. It is not surprising that it was awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award for Garden Merit!
Although this evergreens’ native home in the snow capped mountains make it a hardy and robust plant it will hate being planted in wet areas. Ensure that it is situated in well drained soil and gets direct light for around 6 hours a day. Can be planted in well drained containers (the container must have drainage holes and please follow instructions *
You can expect this variety of Arabis to grow to an average mature height of 6 inches or 15cm and spread of 50cm (20 inches). If you are plagued by deer or rabbits eating your plants, then they should leave this one alone and if you live by the coast then that salty air is not a problem either.
(*Alan Titmarsh offers this helpul information into preparing cotainers for plants that need to be well drained. “Place a handful of drainage material (bits of broken clay flowerpot, polystyrene packaging or clean pebbles or gravel) in the base. Fill the tub with good-quality multi-purpose compost, leaving a gap of an inch at the rim of the pot to allow for watering later. “)
